He attended Wake Forest University and played collegiate baseball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In 2016, he played summer college baseball for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Fairchild was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft. With the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021, he made his MLB debut and has additionally represented the Seattle Mariners and the San Francisco Giants.

Fairchild signed a contract worth $1,802,800 as a signing bonus after being chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round, 38th overall, of the 2017 MLB Draft.

On August 31, 2020, the Reds transferred Josh VanMeter and Fairchild to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for cash and relief pitcher Archie Bradley. The Cincinnati Reds took Fairchild off waivers on June 11, 2022.
