One of Chicago’s two major league organizations is the Cubs, while the other is the Chicago White Sox, who play in the American League (AL) Central division.
The Cubs, originally known as the White Stockings, joining the NL as a founding member in 1876, later changing their name to the Chicago Cubs in 1903. The White Sox’s participation in the 2005 World Series brought “the other drought” back to the minds of Chicago baseball fans.
Only their crosstown rival Cubs, who haven’t won a championship since 1908, have a worse record than the White Sox’s 1917 World Series victory.
The White Sox suffered through their inefficiency in essential obscurity, but the Cubs’ problems throughout the century of stupidity have assumed mythical proportions.
Contrary to the Cubs, the White Sox had no Billy goats, August day games, Bartman’s, or prominent Wrigleyville fanbase to blame for their misfortune. Instead, the humble White Sox slowly fell to a lower echelon in the Windy City.
In their respective leagues, both teams are founding members. The only pair of teams in the same city that have spent their entire history there is this one, and Chicago is the only city that has consistently had more than one team.
Both teams played in venues regarded as the most opulent of their era and were owned by baseball greats.
