Whitley David Merrifield is a second baseman and outfielder in Major League Baseball for the Kansas City Royals. He’s a two-time All-Star who has three times led the American League in stolen bases.
Merrifield played college baseball at the University of South Carolina from 2008 to 2010. He graduated from Davie County High School in Mocksville, North Carolina.
In 2008, he played collegiate summer baseball for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox, and in 2009, he returned to the league with the Chatham Anglers.
Merrifield produced a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give South Carolina the championship in the second game of the 2010 College World Series.
He appeared in 195 games for South Carolina over his three years there, hitting .329/.389/.489 with 27 home runs.
Merrifield was selected in the ninth round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals. He signed with the Royals and made his baseball debut with the Burlington Bees that season.
He hit .253/.317/.409 in 47 games, with five home runs and 26 RBIs. Merrifield had a.262 batting average with five home runs and 36 RBIs for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2011.
In 125 games with both Wilmington and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in 2012, he hit.258 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs. In 94 games with Northwest Arkansas in 2013, he hit .270/.319/.391 with three home runs and 43 RBIs.
Merrifield began 2014 with the Northwest Arkansas Razorbacks before being promoted to the Omaha Storm Chasers midway through the season.
Between the two clubs, he hit .319/.371/.470 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs in 120 games. Merrifield batted .265 with five home runs and 38 RBIs in 135 games for Omaha in 2015. To begin the 2016 season, he returned to Omaha.
Merrifield debuted in the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals on May 18, 2016, immediately hitting in the top third of the lineup and quickly displacing Omar Infante as the starting second baseman.
