Marquis was set to become a restricted free agent in 2022, the year he is 28 years old, had he not agreed to this contract extension.

The Rockies will have custody of Marquez until he reaches the age of 29, and he will be a free agent when he reaches the age of 30.

The Rockies’ starting rotation is anchored by Marquez and left-hander Kyle Freeland, who turns 26 on May 14 and finished fourth in voting for the National League Cy Young Award last year.

After going 11-7 in 2017 and 14-11 in 2018, both seasons in which he broke a Rockies team record for strikeouts (230), Marquez has struggled mightily in recent years.

In 2017, his ERA was 4.39 and in 2018, it was 3.77. He was 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA in five September outings, striking out 11 batters per outing. He was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for September for his efforts.

Since June 30, 2018, the Rockies have gone 14-5 in Marquez’s last 19 outings. In 126 innings, he has a 10-3 record, a 2.25 ERA, 28 walks, and 160 strikeouts.

The Rockies have won both of Marquez’s outings so far this season, and he has a record of 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA.

Corey Dickerson and minor league third baseman Kevin Padlo were traded to the Colorado Rockies in January 2016 in exchange for Jake McGee and Corey Dickerson, respectively.

When the Rockies acquired Marquez in a trade, he had just finished his first season at the High Class A level.

Before Wednesday, Marquez had never faced the Rays. After allowing only one hit in the first five frames, he entered the bottom of the sixth inning having struck out 14 of the previous 15 players he had faced.

During the sixth inning, Marquez gave up two singles, fired an uncharacteristic pitch, then issued a walk to put runners on second and third base. However, he managed to induce Brandon Lowe, the team’s cleanup hitter, to ground into an out.
