During his tenure at Archbishop Rummel, he rotated between the positions of tight end, H-back, and fullback on the football team.

As a senior in 2012, he earned Honorable Mention All-State honours after catching 23 receptions for 418 yards and 5 touchdowns, earning him a place on the team.

In 2012, Rummell High School won the state title for Louisiana Class 5A with a perfect 14-0 record. In addition, he participated in basketball while at Rummell and helped lead the team to a record of 21–11 and an appearance in the state quarterfinals in 2012.

Between the years 2013 and 2016, Carter was a tight end for the University of Nebraska on the Lincoln football team. Both the media and the coaches of the Big Ten gave him an Honorable Mention All-Conference nod in 2016.
