He played collegiate football at Boston College on a football scholarship, and the Dolphins picked him in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Exeter, New Hampshire, was where Long was raised. He attended Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, for a year after graduating from Exeter High School to finish his post-secondary studies.

He played tight end and defensive end while in high school. He finished his senior year with 30 catches for 508 yards, two scores and seven sacks. He had seven tackles for a loss in defence.

He verbally agreed to represent Boston College in collegiate football. Long did not take part in any athletic competitions when he was a first-year student at Boston College in 2017.

In the 2018 season, he participated in all 12 games and had four receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. With 28 catches, 509 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Long finished the 2019 season.
