Thompson started his football career at Palm Springs High School, located in Palm Springs, California. He was rated a three-star recruit by Scout and 247sports, and a two-star recruit by Rivals.com
During his senior season, Thompson was an integral part of the Indians’ 24-3 (.889) record, which included an 11-1 (.917) record in league play over the previous two years. He led the 2015 team to the CIF title.
As a senior in 2015, Thompson also had three touchdown receptions and caught 16 passes for a total of 325 yards and a 20.3% average.
Thompson attended San Diego State University and played college football for the San Diego State Aztecs.
Despite participating in only eight games during his freshman season, Thompson finished the year with nine tackles and one pass breakup for the season. He was one of only three freshmen to play defense as a first-year player.
