Aaron James Civale (born June 12, 1995) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Cleveland Guardians.
Civale signed with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and pitched for them in 2016, going 0–2 with a 1.67 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in 13 starts.
He threw for the Lake County Captains and Lynchburg Hillcats in 2017, going 13–6 with a 3.28 ERA in 27 total starts between the two clubs, and he started for the Akron RubberDucks in 2018, going 5-7 with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts.
To begin 2019, he returned to Akron. On June 6, Civale was promoted to the Columbus Clippers.
Before being called up, he was 5–0 with a 2.85 ERA in seven starts between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus.
Civale’s contract was picked on June 21, 2019, and he was called up to the main leagues for the first time.
He pitched six innings against the Detroit Tigers, striking out six batters and winning the game 2–0 after Brad Hand rescued his 22nd game.
He became the 10th pitcher in Major League history (and the first for the Indians) to throw at least 5+23 innings and allow two runs or fewer in each of his first six starts since 1908.
He was 4–6 with a 4.74 ERA in 2020. He had the most hits allowed (82) and the highest batting average against in the American League (.282).
Civale was placed on the disabled list with a middle finger strain on June 23, 2021. Civale led the MLB in victories with ten at the time of his assignment.
Civale was placed on the 60-day injury list on July 26. Civale returned in September, and on October 3, he pitched six scoreless innings against the Texas Rangers to win Cleveland’s final game under the Indians moniker.
He had a 12–5 record and a 3.84 ERA in 21 starts for the 2021 season.
