Daniel Joseph recalls being surrounded by grandeur when he was 15 years old. While watching his brother play basketball in the high school arena, he noticed players like Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson, Tyler Ennis, Jamal Murray, and Dylan Brooks.
When Joseph witnessed how much effort and dedication those guys were putting into their sport, which at the time he was doing before switching to football, he was motivated to do the same.
Joseph, a defensive lineman who stands six feet three and weighs 265 pounds, didn’t pursue basketball like the few of his local competitors he witnessed that day, but he did apply what he learned from them to the field.
The Brampton, Ontario native, who transferred to North Carolina State after the 2019 season, has already surpassed his sack and tackle totals from his three seasons at Penn State, totaling 2.5 and 5.5 respectively. Joseph has accumulated 6.5 sacks and 37 total tackles so far this season.
Joseph had dreams of being a professional basketball player, just like his brother, Faith Ekakitie, a 2017 draft pick by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and his cousin, Ese Mrabure-Ajufo, a 2015 draft pick by the BC Lions. He didn’t really start to take football seriously or realize it was the career path he would follow until his junior year of high school.
As a tight end in his junior year, he hauled in 26 receptions for 498 yards and eight touchdowns. A year later, as a senior, he played both ways, scoring 10 touchdowns as a tight end and 72 times as a defensive lineman (2 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions).
After graduating from high school, Joseph played three seasons for the Nittany Lions. He switched to NC State, which was apparently one of the schools that had recruited him in the first place, after the 2019 season, after deciding he had gained what he needed from his time there. He joined his new squad at the end of February 2020.
