George Joseph Kirby (born February 8, 1998) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Seattle Mariners.
Kirby was selected with the 20th overall choice in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft, making him one of the best prospects in the game. He signed a $3.24 million contract with Seattle.
He was sent to the Everett AquaSox of the Class A Short Season Northwest League after signing and played the whole 2019 season with them. Kirby had a 2.35 ERA in nine games (eight starts), striking out 25 batters in 23 innings.
Kirby did not appear in a minor league game in 2020 owing to the minor league season being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to Everett in 2021, now as a member of the High-A-West.
He was promoted to the Double-A Central’s Arkansas Travelers in August. Kirby had a 5–3 record and a 2.53 ERA in 15 starts for the two teams, striking out 80 hitters in 67+23 innings.
Kirby will start the 2022 season in Arkansas.
Kirby’s contract was picked by the Mariners on May 8, 2022, and he was promoted to the major leagues.
