Joe Ross is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball (MLB). The San Diego Padres selected Ross in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft (25th overall). In 2015 Ross made his major league debut.
When it came to the Nationals’ offense in the first half of 2017, Ross was a hit-or-miss kind of guy. While he was a member of the Class-AAA Syracuse Chiefs, he was promoted to the majors after the Nationals’ starter, Jeremy Guthrie, was trashed for 10 earned runs in less than an inning.
May 1 marked the day he was optioned back to Syracuse in lieu of Jacob Turner. Ross made his major league debut on May 23 against the Seattle Mariners and had a strong outing.
With the Nationals averaging more than 10 runs in games Ross began, he enjoyed more run support than any other pitcher in the league. A total of 8 of Ross’ 13 starts at the major league level in 2017 saw the Nationals score 10 runs or more.
After making three starts against the Atlanta Braves, Ross was forced to leave in the fourth inning on July 9 because his fastball velocity had dropped to a point where it was being registered by the stadium radar gun.
