Smith played summer baseball with the North Adams Steeplecats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League in late summer 2004.

Smith pitched briefly for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League’s Rockville Express in 2005. In 2005, he made nine appearances for the Express, accumulating a 1–0 record, a 4.66 ERA, and two saves.

Later in 2005’s summer, Smith pitched for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League. In 16 regular-season appearances totaling 17.1 innings, he recorded nine saves with a 2.08 ERA, .197 batting average against, and 19 hitters struck out.

He also recorded the final out of the 2005 Petitt Cup event with a comebacker, giving Edenton its second consecutive league title. In less than two years, Smith became the first Steamers’ alum to play in the major leagues.

On June 21, Smith debuted with Brooklyn (A) of the New York–Penn League, surrendering two runs, one of which was earned, in one inning against the Staten Island Yankees. Baseball America ranked him among the league’s top twenty prospects.

When Duaner Sánchez was injured in a taxicab incident in 2006, Mets general manager Omar Minaya contemplated recalling Smith to the Major Leagues.

To give Smith additional time in the minors, the Mets acquired Roberto Hernández and liver Pérez through trade.
