He was a linebacker and running back for the football team at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, Connecticut. He concluded his high school career with 2,357 yards rushing, 1,355 yards receiving, 3,898 all-purpose yards on offense.

He also had 371 tackles, 4.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, eight interceptions, and 59 total touchdowns. He participated in collegiate football for Temple University’s Temple Owls football team. He participated in all 13 games during his rookie season and made his debut in Week 5. During the 2016 NFL Draft’s seventh round, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Tyler. He signed a rookie contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May 2016 that had a four-year duration, $2.40 million salary, and a $63,502 signing bonus.
