He debuted professionally in 2014 with the Dominican Summer League Astros, with a 3–2 record with a 2.78 earned run average (ERA) in 14 games.

He began 2016 with the Quad Cities River Bandits, posting a 2–8 record and 3.50 ERA before being promoted to the Lancaster JetHawks, where he concluded the season, going 1–0 with a 5.40 ERA in three games.

The Astros traded Abreu and Jorge Guzmán to the New York Yankees for Brian McCann on November 17, 2016.

In 2017, he pitched for the Charleston RiverDogs, Tampa Yankees, and GCL Yankees, combining for a 2–3 record and 3.38 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched.

After the 2017 season, the Yankees added him to their 40-man roster. August 8, 2020, Abreu made his MLB debut.

The Yankees transferred Abreu and Robert Ahlstrom to the Texas Rangers on April 2, 2022, in exchange for catcher Jose Trevino.

Abreu was given numerous opportunities to prove he was deserving of a roster position by the Yankees, but he never took advantage of them.

Trevino may start raking in New York, based on moves like the Clay Holmes deal, which illustrate Cashman’s propensity for these 1-for-1 swaps.
