Rafael Montero is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Seattle Mariners.

On January 20, 2011, Montero became a member of the New York Mets organization after signing a contract as an international free agent.

He signed the contract when he was well into his 20s, well past the typical age range for Dominican players. In his first year as a professional, he finished with a record of 5-4 along with a 2.15 earned run average and 66 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched.

In 2012, Montero had a record of 11-5 with a 2.36 earned run average. He pitched 122 innings and had 110 strikeouts and only 19 walks.

Before the start of the 2013 season, Baseball America had him pegged as the sixth-best prospect the Mets possessed. He began the campaign with the Mets of the Double-A level in Binghamton. In June, he received a promotion to play for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s.

In 2013, while playing for both Binghamton and Las Vegas, he had a combined record of 12-7 with a 2.43 ERA for Binghamton and a 3.05 ERA for Las Vegas. In 154.4 innings worked, he had 150 strikeouts and 35 walks.
