Yoshitomo “Yoshi” Tsutsugo is a Major League Baseball outfielder and first baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB).

He’s also played in MLB with the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yokohama BayStars/Yokohama DeNA BayStars (NPB).

He was the BayStars’ youngest player to hit 100, 150, and 200 home runs in team history.

Tsutsugo became the first player in Nippon Professional Baseball history to hit three consecutive multiple home run games on July 22, 2016 and the first to hit six multiple home run games in the same month.

Tsutsugo made his professional debut with the Yokohama BayStars in 2010 at the age of 18. In 2011, he was named to his first NPB All-Star Game, followed by three more in 2012 and 2013.

He hit 22 home runs, drove in 77 runs, and batted.300 with a.373 OBP in 2014. He earned MVPs in 2015 and 2016 and set career highs in batting average and on-base percentage.

After the 2019 season, the BayStars announced that he will be allowed to enter the Major League Baseball posting system.

In 2019, Tsutsugo signed a two-year, $12 million contract with Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays. In March 2020, he returned to Japan owing to the COVID-19 epidemic.

On Opening Day 2020, he made his Major League Baseball debut against the Toronto Blue Jays. He was transferred to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 15, 2021, in return for cash for a player to be announced later.

He signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 16, 2001.
