Sweeney attended Don Bosco Preparatory High School while growing up in Ramsey, New Jersey. In his final year,

he caught 27 receptions for 539 yards and five touchdowns. Sweeney redshirted his freshman year before playing five seasons for the Boston College Eagles.

He was selected third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference as a redshirt junior after leading the squad with 36 receptions, 512 receiving yards, and four touchdown grabs (ACC).

With seven receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown versus Iowa in the 2017 Pinstripe Bowl, he finished the campaign strong.

Sweeney earned first-team All-ACC honours and had 32 catches for 348 yards and three touchdowns in his final season with the Eagles.

Sweeney played in 38 games throughout his college career, recording 99 receptions for 1,281 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Buffalo Bills selected Sweeney in the seventh round (228th overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft.

On September 8, 2019, during the Bills’ season-opening game against the New York Jets, he made his NFL debut.

Sweeney played six games as a rookie and caught eight catches for 114 yards. He was sidelined for the remainder of the season after contracting myocarditis as a result of the virus.

It was declared in April 2021 that Sweeney should be prepared for the season of 2021.
