The Portsmouth Spartans football team debuted in the NFL on July 12, 1930. Portsmouth, Ohio is where the team was established. Due to financial issues, the franchise was transferred to Detroit in 1934. The team was also given a new name: the Lions, in commemoration of the Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise from the city, the Tigers.
The Lions won four NFL Championship Games between 1935 and 1957, which is before the Super Bowl era. Since it won the league championship in 1957, the team has had the longest playoff winless run in the league. They are the only Super Bowl franchise in existence right now that has never played in the championship game.
