Matt Nelson is an offensive guard for the National Football League’s Detroit Lions. Iowa was where he played collegiate football.

Nelson played for the Iowa Hawkeyes for a total of five seasons, starting out as a true freshman. In his collegiate career, Nelson finished with 111 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, nine sacks, nine pass breakups, and one forced fumble. He also had nine pass breakups.

The Detroit Lions intended to move Nelson to the offensive line when they signed him as an undrafted free agent after they decided to take a chance on him.

He was released from the team at the final roster cuts, but the Lions re-signed him to their practice squad, where he remained for the rest of the season while he adjusted to playing on the offensive line.

In the year 2020, Nelson was one of the players to make the team after training camp. Nelson played his first game in the National Football League (NFL) against the Chicago Bears in the opening game of the season on September 13, 2020.

On March 4, 2021, the Lions presented Nelson with a tender for an exclusive-rights free agent contract. On April 19th, he put his signature on the deal for one year.
