In the National Football League, Andrew Van Ginkel is a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins. He stands 1.93 m tall and weighs 110 kg. Heath played quarterback for the football team at Rock Valley Community High School. After his final year of high school football, he did not take part in recruiting camps and did not garner interest from many powerhouse universities. He played defensive end at the University of South Dakota to start his college career.

After one season of playing, he quit and enrolled in Iowa Western Community College. He kept on playing defensive end at Iowa Western. He played linebacker for the Wisconsin Badgers football squad for two seasons after transferring to the University of Wisconsin. In the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Van Ginkel was chosen by the Miami Dolphins.

In September of this year, he was put on injured reserve. On November 20, 2019, he became operational. He recovered a fumble that Jared Goff had lost in a game against the Los Angeles Rams in November 2020 and returned it for a touchdown, scoring 78 yards later as the Los Angeles Rams were defeated 28–17. In Dolphins team history, this was the second-longest fumble return. He forced a fumble on running back Melvin Gordon in Week 11’s game against the Denver Broncos at the goal line, which the Dolphins recovered in the 20-13 defeat.
