In the eighth inning of Monday’s home opener against the Angels, second baseman Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros strained his left hamstring while running out an infield single.
The Astros triumphed 8-3, but Altuve and his batting average of.167 were placed on the injured list. It won’t be until April 29 that he can come back. player J.J. Matijevic from the minor leagues.
After dominating for the Class AAA Sugar Land Space Cowboys minor league squad, Matijevic has already been added to Houston’s roster.
It is improbable that he will play second base in the Majors because he spent half of his games at first base and the other half in left field.
Matijevic is hitting .310 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 11 games during his fifth season in the Minors. He was selected by the Astros in the second round of the 2017 draft out of the University of Arizona.
The Astros placed first baseman Taylor Jones on the 60-day IL to make way for Matijevic. Jones has been dealing with a lower back ailment ever since training camp.
Why Is Altuve Not Playing?
Jose Altuve, the second baseman for the Astros, suffered a hamstring strain against the Angels on Monday night. Although he sat out of the Astros’ 7-2 loss on Tuesday, it was hoped that he wouldn’t have to spend much time on the injured list.
