Why Is Astudillo Not Playing?

Willians Astudillo, also known as “La Tortuga,” is a Venezuelan professional baseball utility player who plays for the Miami Marlins.

Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports that Astudillo left Sunday’s game against the Rays after taking a pitch to the foot which is why the player is currently not playing.

Astudillo, who joined the Minnesota Twins in 2018 and has played every position in a major league game with the exception of shortstop, has established numerous impressive records.



On December 15, 2008, Astudillo signed his first professional baseball deal with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent. Astudillo made his professional sports debut in 2009 for the VSL Phillies.

Astudillo and the Atlanta Braves reached a minor league deal on November 19, 2015. In 2016, he hit in 89 games with the Double-A Mississippi Braves batting 267/.293/.332, scoring 30 runs and launching 4 home homers.

On April 4, 2017, the same day he signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Astudillo was sent to the Triple-A Reno Aces.

Astudillo was assigned to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings after signing a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins on November 30, 2017.

Astudillo and the Miami Marlins agreed to a minor league contract on March 13, 2022.  He started the 2022 campaign with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at the Triple-A level. On May 25, he faced the Tampa Bay Rays in his Major League Baseball debut for the Marlins.
