His early years were carved around the fact that he was a product of Benicia High School in Benicia California. He was selected first by the Tampa Bay Rays in the year 2013 in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball draft. However, Willie did not sign and opted to go to college instead.

He got admitted and enrolled at the University Of Arizona where he featured in baseball for the college team Arizona Wildcats. He also played summer baseball with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League.



He began his professional career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft in the year 2015. He made his first professional appearance with the Ogden Raptors. He later got his promotion to the Great Lakes Loons and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

On July 31, 2017, he was traded to the Texas Rangers along with many others in exchange for one Yu Darvish. Willie Calhoun got his promotion to the major leagues on September 12, 2017. He recently was optioned on May 1, 2022, to Triple-A Round Rock Express.
