Mills attended Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington. After being undrafted out of high school in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, he attended Gonzaga University and played collegiate baseball for the Bulldogs.

After his senior year, Mills was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. Mills got a contract with the Seattle Mariners and spent time with the Everett AquaSox before being promoted to the Clinton LumberKings.



In 20+1⁄3 innings pitched between the two clubs, he went 0–2 with six saves and a 1.77 ERA, striking out 29. In 2018, he began the year with the Modesto Nuts, with whom he went 6–0 with 11 saves and a 1.91 ERA in 42+1⁄3 innings pitched and was named a California League All-Star.

On November 20, 2020, Mills was added to the 40-man roster. On May 1, 2021, Mills was promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He made his MLB debut that night, pitching a scoreless inning of relief against the Los Angeles Angels.

For the 2021 season with the Mariners, Mills pitched 12+2⁄3 innings in which he gave up 14 earned runs, walking seven, and striking out 11. When not with Seattle, Mills pitched with the Tacoma Rainers of the Triple-A West, going 4-2 with a 3.14 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 28+2⁄3 innings.
