He attended Miramar High School for his high school education. He attended West Virginia University after high school and played collegiate football for the West Virginia Mountaineers from 2014 to 2018.

In 2014, he sat out the season. He made six starts during the 2015 campaign before becoming hurt. But when the Mountaineers won the Cactus Bowl at the end of the campaign, he came back. During the season opener against Missouri in 2016, he suffered a season-ending injury.

He made 13 starts for the Mountaineers in 2017 and was named to the Second Team of the Big 12 Conference. He received numerous awards during his senior season, including FWAA All-American (Second Team), Phil Steele All-America (Second Team), Athlon Sports All-America (Fourth Team), Big 12 Conference Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, and All-Big 12 Conference First Team.
