In the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, Yordan Lvarez played for Las Tunas in the Cuban National League. He hit .196 in his first year as a 16-year-old but hit .351 with 17 RBI in 40 games as a 17-year-old sophomore.

He then signed with the Houston Astros after defecting from Cuba.

In 2016, he made his professional debut with the DSL Astros Orange of the Dominican Summer League, where he hit .341 in 16 games.

In 2017, he split his time between the Florida State League’s Buies Creek Astros and the Midwest League’s Quad Cities River Bandits, hitting .304 in 90 games with 12 home runs and 69 RBI.

In 2018, he started the season with the Texas League’s Corpus Christi Hooks, hitting .325 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI in 43 games.

As a result, he was promoted to AAA and assigned to the Pacific Coast League’s Fresno Grizzlies. In the 2017 and 2018 Futures Games, he was a member of the World team.

He played the entire game at first base in the second of these, going 1 for 3 with a walk. In 2018, he appeared in 88 games for Corpus Christi and Fresno, hitting .293 with 20 home runs and 74 RBI.

At the start of the 2019 season, he was back in the minors, not that he needed to show anything in AAA, but the Astros were such a strong club that he couldn’t crack the roster.

Over the first two months of the season, he pounded PCL pitching, hitting .334 in 56 games with 16 doubles, 23 homers, and 71 RBI.
