R Kelly is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and convicted sex offender. For his high school talent show in Chicago’s Hyde Park area, in September 1980, Kelly enrolled at Kenwood Academy, where he met music teacher Lena McLin, who pushed him to sing Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky.”
Smiling shyly on stage, Kelly received first prize for her rendition of the song with a pair of sunglasses on her face. Kelley’s high school basketball coach, McLin, pushed her to leave the team and focus on her singing. After seeing him perform at the talent event, she claims he changed his tune.
As a result of a diagnosis of dyslexia, Kelly was unable to read or write at all. After a year at Kenwood Academy, Kelly dropped out of high school.
When he was a kid, he started performing in the Chicago “L” subway system. The “L” stop on the Red Line’s Jackson station in the Loop is where he frequently performs.
He sang “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” at Ben Wilson’s funeral after Kelly had played basketball with the Illinois state champion at a young age.
