Nelson Piquet is a Brazilian retired racing driver and businessman. Since his retirement, Piquet, a three-time World Champion, has been ranked among the greatest Formula One (F1) drivers in various motorsport polls.
Piquet moved to the Brabham team for the final race of 1978; he qualified 14th and finished 11th. Brabham was the home of Piquet until his departure in 1985.
Piquet made his Formula One debut in 1979, competing in all 16 races of the season. He returned to the Brabham squad, this time with Niki Lauda as his co-driver. For a team used to win, the season was difficult.
Piquet was forced to retire in eleven of the season’s fifteen races. At the Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires and the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, he was engaged in a first-lap pileup and was wounded, and he crashed with Clay Regazzoni’s Williams vehicle.
At the Dutch Grand Prix, where he finished fourth, he earned his first career point. While Regazzoni was involved in another altercation with Piquet, the BT48’s rear portion was entirely ripped off at Monza’s Curva Grande corner.
