Shinzo Abe was a politician from Japan who held the position of the prime minister of that country from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He passed away on July 8, 2022.
He held the record for most years as prime minister of Japan. In addition, Abe worked for Junichiro Koizumi as Chief Cabinet Secretary from 2005 to 2006. In 2012, he also temporarily led the opposition.
On Friday morning in the southern city of Nara, Mr. Abe received two gunshot wounds.
He instantly lost consciousness and was taken to the closest hospital. Mr. Abe was attacked while delivering a campaign speech for a political candidate in Nara at a traffic light. Photos obtained at the site showed him bleeding.
Witnesses claimed to have observed a guy fire twice at Mr. Abe from behind while holding what they characterized as a heavy gun.
Security personnel apprehended the assailant, who made no attempt to flee and took his allegedly homemade pistol into custody.
Tetsuya Yamagami, a resident of Nara, has been named as the suspect. He is reportedly said to have served in Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, which is the country’s version of the navy.
