Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe passed away on Friday, July 8, 2022, after Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, shot him in Nara, Japan.
Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, was shot in the chest while attending a public event, and his health remained critical for a while. This is the first killing of a current or former prime minister of Japan in about a century, according to a Reuters report.
Tetsuya previously served three years in the Maritime Self-Defense Force of the Japanese navy (JMSDF). He is a resident of Nara. Tetsuya, the alleged shooter, allegedly did not attempt to run after the incident, according to a witness.
He laid his pistol down and remained still when Abe’s security guards entered. Tetsuya Yamagami was promptly taken into custody by the security people present, and a gun was found nearby.
According to the Japanese news source NHK World, Yamagami was taken into custody by police on grounds that she may have attempted to kill someone.
Shinzo Abe’s “dissatisfaction” with him led Tetsuya Yamagami to confess to investigators that he had intended to murder the former prime minister.
