Brendan Joel McKay is a pitcher and designated hitter in Major League Baseball for the Tampa Bay Rays. McKay was chosen by the Rays in the first round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, with the fourth overall pick. At the University of Louisville, he was a baseball player.
In Chippewa, Pennsylvania, McKay attended Blackhawk High School. He was a four-year member of the varsity baseball team and also played one season of high school basketball. He went 72+13 innings without allowing a run as a senior.
He was 8–1 with a 0.56 ERA and 130 strikeouts over his career. In both his junior and senior seasons, McKay was voted Pennsylvania Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.
He was picked in the 34th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres, but he declined to sign and instead played collegiate baseball for the University of Louisville.
In 2015, McKay was a two-way player at Louisville, pitching and playing first base. McKay appeared in 20 games, starting 13 of them.
With a 1.77 ERA, 117 strikeouts, and four saves, he went 9–3. He hit.308/.418/.431 with four home runs and 34 runs batted in in 61 games as a first baseman (RBI).
He got the John Olerud Award for his two-way success. Baseball America awarded McKay the Freshman of the Year.
