Chippewa, Pennsylvania’s Blackhawk High School is where McKay went to high school. He played four seasons of varsity baseball and one season of varsity basketball while in high school, both for the school’s varsity teams.

As a senior, he threw 72+13 innings without allowing a single tally. He had a record of 8-1, an ERA of 0.56, and a strikeout total of 130 in his career.

Both his junior and senior years, McKay was voted the Pennsylvania Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year. San Diego Padres picked him in the 34th round of the 2014 MLB draft, but he chose to play collegiate baseball at the University of Louisville rather than sign a contract.

First baseman and pitcher McKay was a two-way player for the Louisville Cardinals as a freshman in 2015. During the course of the season, McKay appeared in 20 games, with 13 starts.

During the course of the season, he had an ERA of 1.77 and struck out 117 batters. He batted.308/.418/.431 in 61 games at first base, driving in 34 runs and hitting four home runs (RBI).

The John Olerud Award was given to him because of his two-way achievement. The Baseball America Freshman of the Year award went to McKay as well.
