William Penn Murfee (born May 2, 1994) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Seattle Mariners. In 2022, he made his MLB debut.
In Nashville, Tennessee, Murfee attended Montgomery Bell Academy. Murfree attended Vanderbilt University after being undrafted out of high school in 2013. Murfee redshirted his freshman year and went on to play three seasons of collegiate baseball for the Commodores.
Murfee started his first two seasons as an infielder before switching to throwing for his final year at Vanderbilt. For his redshirt senior season, Murfee transferred to Santa Clara University.
Murfee was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 33rd round of the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, with the 988th overall pick.
He pitched for the Everett AquaSox in 2018, finishing 3–2 with a 6.55 ERA in 33 innings. He pitched for the Modesto Nuts, Arkansas Travelers, and Tacoma Rainiers in 2019, going 6–5 with a 3.57 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 113+ innings. Murfee was honored with the Mariners’ minor league “60 ft., 6-in Club” Award for 2019.
After the season, he joined the Arizona Fall League’s Peoria Javelinas. He was also named for the United States national baseball team for the 2019 WBSC Premier 12 on October 10, 2019.
Murfee was added to the Mariner’s active roster on April 20, 2022. On April 29, 2022, he made his Major League Baseball debut, pitching against the Miami Marlins.
