The death of former Torino striker Akeem Omolade, who was discovered dead in his car, has rocked Italian soccer.

Between 2001 and 2003, the 39-year-old Nigerian made multiple Serie A appearances for the Turin club. Prior to his retirement in 2017, he had previously played for Treviso, Reggiana, and 10 other Italian clubs.

However, disaster struck on Monday in Sicily’s capital Palermo, where emergency responders found him motionless in a Peugeot 206.

Relatives claim that Kaduna-born Omolade had previously complained of leg discomfort. Initial examinations revealed that he had no visible wounds.

This is what Torino has to say about it: “Our condolences to the Omolade family on the loss of one of our former players, Akeem Omolade, go out to President Urbano Cairo and the entire Torino Football Club.

“On February 2, 2003, against Inter Milan, he made his Serie A debut for our first squad after signing from Treviso.

There are no words to express our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in this time of loss more than those of the entire Torino family.

After being attacked by a gang of Treviso’s Ultras, Omolade became involved in the battle against racism while at the club.
As a show of support for the striker, his teammates painted their faces black for the next match.

Omolade last appeared on the field for Altofonte in Sicily past season.

The ace has also played for teams like Borgata Terrenove and Mazara in Italy’s lower leagues.
