How good is Alex Verdugo?
Verdugo’s punch boundary has dwindled since the brief 2020 season, but don’t be fooled. He was unlikely to match his .308/.367/.478 line in 2020, given he had a .371 BABIP, the eighth highest in MLB.
Improvements in key areas, most notably lowering the strikeout rate, were tucked away in that tiny downturn overall.
He went from 20.4 percent in 2020 while largely hitting out of the leadoff spot to 15.9 percent in 2021 while mostly hitting out of the two-hole.
In that measure, his strikeout percentage put him in the top 20% of all players in baseball.
According to Baseball Savant, he also increased his exit velocity from 87 to 89.8 mph and his hard hit percentage from 34.4 percent to 42.6 percent.
Verdugo finished the season with a.289/.351/.426 slash line, 13 home runs, 63 RBI, and 88 runs batted in, good for 2.0 fWAR.
Verdugo’s performance in team wins against team losses was an intriguing split. Verdugo hit.345 with all 13 home runs and 52 RBI in 83 Red Sox wins.
In 63 losses, on the other hand, he hit.209 with no home runs and only 11 RBI. Of course, there are two ways to look at this, but I’ll choose the optimistic perspective.
At least a portion of the time, he was a driving force behind winning offensive performances.
