Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy CBE LH is an Indian business magnate.



Narayana Murthy founded Infosys and served as its chairman, chief executive officer, president, and chief mentor until resigning and becoming chairman emeritus.

Murthy was born and raised in the Karnataka town of Shidlaghatta. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore, and a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

Murthy had worked as the chief systems programmer at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and Patni Computer Systems in Pune before joining Infosys (Maharashtra).

He founded Infosys in 1981, serving as CEO from 1981 to 2002 and chairman from 2002 to 2011. In 2011, he resigned from the board and was named chairman emeritus. Murthy was appointed executive chairman for a five-year term in June 2013.

Fortune magazine named Murthy one of the 12 best entrepreneurs of our time.

Time magazine and CNBC have dubbed him the “Father of the Indian IT Sector” for his contributions to outsourcing in India. Murthy has received the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri honors.

Sudha Murty is the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and an educator, author, and philanthropist. She is married to billionaire business mogul, N. R. Narayana Murthy.

Murty is most known for her humanitarian activities and contributions to Kannada and English literature.

Sudha Murty was the first female engineer engaged by TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company, India’s largest automaker (TELCO).

She began her career with the organization as a Development Engineer in Pune and has since worked in Mumbai and Jamshedpur.
