Billy Bingham, a former Northern Ireland soccer player and coach who led the country to two World Cups, has died. He was 90 years old.
Bingham’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement released on Friday. Bingham’s son, David, said his father died late Thursday in an English care home.

Glentoran was his first professional club, and he played for them from 1948 to 1950. After moving to England, he spent eight years with Sunderland, appearing in 227 games. In 1958, he moved to Luton Town, where he spent three years and made nearly 100 league games.

After that, he spent two years with Everton, when he nearly reached 100 league appearances again.

His professional career would be as illustrious as his playing one. He was selected manager of Northern Ireland two years after taking charge of Southport in 1965, after leading the “Sandgrounders” to progression from the Fourth Division. He also managed Plymouth Argyle and then Linfield during his stint as an international manager.
