Clayton Walter Holmes is a pitcher with the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball. In 2018, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Holmes attended Slocomb High School in Slocomb, Alabama, and was drafted in the ninth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.



Despite his promise to Auburn University, he signed with the Pirates and got a $1.2 million signing bonus, opting out of his college baseball commitment.

Holmes, a native of State College, Pennsylvania, made his professional debut in 2012 with the State College Spikes and stuck with them for the entire season, going 5–3 with a 2.28 ERA in 13 starts.

In 2013, he pitched for the West Virginia Power, where he went 5–6 with a 4.08 ERA in 26 outings (25 starts). He had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and was forced to miss the full season.

After returning to the game in 2015, he played three rehab games for the Gulf Coast League Pirates before being sent to the Bradenton Marauders.

He made six starts for Bradenton and struck out 16 batters in 23 innings, accumulating a 2.74 earned run average. Holmes spent the 2016 season with the Altoona Curve, where he went 10–9 with a 4.22 ERA in 26 games.
