David Trimble was a British politician who was the first First Minister of Northern Ireland from 1998 to 2002, and the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) from 1995 to 2005.

It was in the early 1970s when Trimble became a member of the right-wing, paramilitary-linked Vanguard Unionist Progressive Party.

In the 1973 Assembly election for North Down, he ran for the party but was defeated, finishing last in the field of candidates. Legal consultant to Ulster Workers’ Council during the successful strike against Sunningdale Agreement in 1974, he served a lawyer.



The Vanguard candidate for Belfast South was elected to the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention in 1975, and he served as the party’s joint deputy leader for a while alongside Glenn Barr of the Ulster Defence Association.

As a result of Craig’s plan to allow voluntary power-sharing with the SDLP, Trimble was one of many who backed him when the party split over Craig’s opposition to sharing power with Irish Nationalists.
