Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a prominent associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was born on June 25, 1954, in the Bronx, New york. Although she is of Latino descent, she is of American nationality. Sonia was educated at the Blessed Sacrament School for her basic education and later attended Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. She is a product of the Yale Law School (1976-1979).

Sotomayor was the youngest  Puerto Rican woman Judge in the Southern District and the U.S federal court. She was one of the seven women of the 58 judges in the Soutern District Court. After the retirement of former Justice David Souter, she was nominated to the supreme court by former President Barack Obama on May 26, 2009, and became the third woman to hold the position.

Sonia Sotomayor had subsequently been nominated by former President George Bush and President Bill Clinton to the U.S Southern District Court and the U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit respectively. She has also lectured at the New York University School of Law and Columbia School of Law.



Sotomayor has seated on more than 3,000 cases and contributed about 380 opinions in her career before entering the Supreme Court.

Sonia was born to parents Juan Sotomayor and Celina Baez. She is one of her parent’s two children. Her father who was a tool and dye worker died when Sonia was nine so she grew up with her brother, and mother who was a nurse and telephone operator. Sonia’s brother is called  Juan Sotomayor (Jr). He is currently a physician and professor at the University of Syracuse New York.
