Belton High School was where Smythe received his education and participated in his high school football activities. Smythe received his education at Notre Dame, where he also participated in collegiate football.

Over the course of four years, he finished with a total of 28 receptions, 381 receiving yards, and six receiving touchdowns.

Smythe was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Dolphins used the pick that they received from Cleveland in exchange for Jarvis Landry to choose Smythe. The overall selection was 123rd.

He played his first game in the National Football League during Week 1 of the 2018 season, which was a matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

In Week 12 of the season, while playing against the Indianapolis Colts, he made his career debut with two receptions. During the 2018 campaign, he finished with a total of six receptions and 50 yards receiving.

Smythe participated in all 16 games played during the 2019 season, starting 14 of those contests. At the end of the game, he finished with seven receptions and 65 yards receiving.

It was during Week 6 of the 2020 season against the New York Jets that he scored his first touchdown as a professional on a reception that went for four yards. Smythe re-signed with the Dolphins for another two years on March 22, 2022, as part of a new contract.
