Elise Mertens is a Belgian professional tennis player who is the current world No. 1 in doubles. A top 15 player in both singles and doubles, she achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 12 on 26 November 2018.

Mertens was born in Leuven, the second daughter of Liliane Barbe, a teacher, and Guido Mertens, a furniture maker for churches. Mertens’s mother was Liliane Barbe, and her father was Guido Mertens. She received her education at home and was fluent in French, English, and Flemish Dutch. Her favorite subject was language study.
