Elise Mertens, a professional tennis player from Belgium, is ranked first in the world in doubles. She is a top 15 doubles and singles player who peaked at world No. 12 in singles on November 26, 2018. She initially attained the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings on May 10, 2021.

In the doubles competition at the 2015 Copa Colsanitas, she made her WTA Tour debut in the main draw alongside Nastja Kolar. In 2016, she teamed up with An-Sophie Mesta to win the Auckland Open, her first WTA doubles championship. Mertens defeated Monica Niculescu, the No. 3 seed, in the Hobart International final to claim victory in January 2017.

Mertens won back-to-back championships in Hobart to start the 2018 season as the first female to do so. She successfully defended her 2017 championship by defeating Mihaela Buzărnescu in the final. She won the doubles championship along with Demi Schuurs.

Seeded third in doubles at the 2022 Australian Open, she and partner Veronika Kudermetova advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual winners Barbora Krejková and Katerina Siniaková. In Dubai, she and Kudermetova won their fifteenth doubles championship by defeating Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok.

For the second time in this Major, she advanced to the fourth round of the 2022 French Open in singles, where she was defeated by Coco Gauff in straight sets, and to the third round of doubles with Kudermetova. She consequently recovered her No. 1 doubles position after the competition’s completion on June 6, 2022.
