Gerrit Alan Cole was born on November 8, 1990, in Newport Beach, California. He formerly played for the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates. Cole was drafted in the first round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. Gerrit played college baseball at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Cole was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates first overall in the 2011 MLB draft. He was traded from the Houston Astros to the New York Yankees in the 2017–18 offseason. On December 16, 2019, Cole signed a $324 million contract with the Yankees, the largest contract for a pitcher.
