Hansjörg Wyss is a wealthy Swiss businessman who supports liberal and environmental issues in the United States.

He developed and served as president and chairman of Synthes Holding AG, a medical device company. His Wyss Foundation is valued at about $2 billion.

Wyss had a net worth of US$5.1 billion as of March 2022, according to Forbes. He has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental organizations and has recently increased his contributions to organizations that promote progressive values.



Wyss was born in Bern, Switzerland in 1935. His father was a salesman of mechanical calculators, and his mother was a housewife. He grew up in a two-bedroom apartment with two sisters.

After earning a master’s degree in civil and structural engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in 1959, Wyss earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1965.

Following that, he worked in the textile industry in a number of positions, including for Chrysler in Pakistan, Turkey, and the Philippines as a plant engineer and project manager.

Wyss’s only child is Amy E Wyss, a Swiss American billionaire, and philanthropist who is married to Ed Jaramillo. Amy was born in 1970/71 and is 50 to 51 years old.
