Norrie was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1995 to David, a Scottish microbiologist from Glasgow, and Helen, a Welsh microbiologist.

In 1998, when Norrie was only three years old, his family relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, where his parents continue to reside.

In 2011, at the age of 16, he relocated to London, where he stayed for three years prior to attending Texas Christian University in Fort Worth from 2014 to 2017.

In June of 2017, he concluded his education at TCU in order to turn professional during the 2017 ATP Tour grass-court season.

Since he became a professional, he has lived in Putney, southwest London (close to Wimbledon).

Norrie opted to move to New Zealand to live with his parents for the remainder of the year after the Indian Wells Masters was canceled in March 2020 due to the onset of pandemic lockdowns.
