Three numbers have been retired by the Kansas City Royals over the franchise’s history, and they are prominently displayed at Kauffman Stadium. Number 5 worn by George Brett, number 10 worn by Dick Howser, and number 20 worn by Frank White.
No.5 George Brett
To this day, George Brett is the only player to win the batting title in three separate decades (in 1976, 1980, and the 1990s). When he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, he was the best player in the world. In 1985, he guided the Royals to their first World Series championship.
Among the all-time greats in hits, doubles, long hits, and total bases, he ranks third. On September 25, 1993, he announced his retirement. The next day the Royals announced he would be inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame and his number retired
No.10 Dick Howser
On April 11, 1961, Dick Howser made his Kansas City Athletics debut as a shortstop. He was selected for the All-Star Game but lost the Rookie of the Year award to Red Sox pitcher Don Schwall by a single vote. The Royals won three division championships and the 1985 World Championship under his leadership.
No.20 Frank White
He won eight American League Gold Gloves. In 1979, he was an All-Star starter and a 5-time All-Star. Slugger award for the year 1986. After joining the Royals Baseball Academy, he waited in the minor levels to be called up.
To become an everyday player after his call-up, it took him nearly two seasons. It took him 10 months longer to be inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame.
