Hernández signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Boston Red Sox on February 2, 2021. He started the season as Boston’s starting center fielder and also saw action at second base.

With a right hamstring strain, Hernández was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 7. On a rehab assignment, he played for the Worcester Red Sox on May 17.

In the game, he hit two home runs, including the first grand slam in team history. The next day, Hernández was back in Boston’s lineup.

After hitting .400 with nine RBIs from July 19–25, he was named AL Player of the Week. Due to a COVID-related injury, Hernández missed a number of games from late August to early September.

Hernández batted .250 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs in 134 games for the Red Sox during the regular season.

He also hit 20 for 49 (.408) in 11 postseason games. The Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series after Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly in Game 4 of the ALDS on October 11.

Hernández set a new MLB record for most total bases in a five-game playoff span, with 34, as well as a new Red Sox franchise record for most total bases in any five-game timeframe.
