Deanne Bray (born May 14, 1971) is an American actress who has appeared in a number of films.
Bray was born deaf and is fluent in both American Sign Language and English sign languages, which she learned as a child.
Her most well-known film part is that of Sue Thomas in the television series Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye. She is also well-known for her recurring role as Emma Coolidge on the hit television series Heroes.
Bray was born in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, California, and has lived there for most of her life.
Though she was largely raised by her father in California, she lived in Seattle for a few years with her mother and attended Washington State School for the Deaf for grade 8.
Bray’s father could communicate in ASL, but her mother refused to learn any. Troy Kotsur, who is also a deaf actor, is her husband.
Bray is a spokesman for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids, an organization dedicated to promoting early childhood education for deaf children (LEAD-K). She gave birth to Kyra Monique Kotsur on September 8, 2005.
Bray’s parents made sure that their daughter learned to speak and write English as well as American Sign Language from a young age, enrolling her in a number of language programs and centers to help her improve her language abilities.
Bray was spotted performing with a deaf dancing company named “Prism West” during a Deaf event at California State University, Northridge, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biology.
She’s working towards a master’s degree in Sign Language Education.
