Guy Damien Lafleur was a Canadian professional ice hockey player known as “The Flower” and “Le Démon Blond.” During his 17-year NHL career, he played for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Quebec Nordiques, winning five Stanley Cups along the way. One of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” of all time was awarded to him in 2017.

Lafleur was born in Thurso, Quebec, on September 20, 1951.  He began playing hockey when he was five years old when he received his first hockey stick as a Christmas present.

From 1962 to 1964, he competed in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Competition three times in a row, setting a tournament record of 64 points.

Lafleur rose to prominence as a member of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in his teens, when he led his club to the Memorial Cup in 1971 and scored 130 regular-season goals. Lafleur admired Jean Béliveau and Bobby Orr at the time.

Lafleur’s health began to deteriorate in 2019. In September, he underwent five bypasses. A cancerous lobe of his left lung was removed in November

. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2020. He also served as a cancer CHUM spokesperson. On April 22, 2022, he died at the age of 70.
